Protect Your Business Today with Comprehensive Professional Indemnity Insurance!
Looking for competitive Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) and tailored advice to suit your needs? Look no further. Also known as Errors & Omissions (E&O) or Professional Liability Insurance, PII is essential for businesses that provide professional services or advice.
What is a Professional Service?
A professional service is a specialist activity or task provided by an individual or firm with recognised expertise, training, or qualifications in a particular field. These services are typically delivered based on skill, judgement, and adherence to industry or regulatory standards, rather than through the sale of physical goods.
Examples include:
- Legal or accountancy advice
- Architectural or engineering design
- Consultancy, marketing, or IT services
- Surveying, financial planning, or HR support
In the context of insurance, professional services refer to activities where clients rely on your advice, designs, or decisions. Errors or omissions in these activities can result in financial loss — making Professional Indemnity Insurance a critical safety net.
Why Do You Need It?
It offers financial protection against allegations of negligence, errors, or omissions made by clients or third parties. In today’s litigious environment, having the right coverage in place can mean the difference between financial ruin and business continuity.
What Professional Indemnity Limit Should You Have?
We offer flexible limits ranging from £100,000 to £10,000,000 and above, ensuring you have appropriate coverage to suit your business size and risk exposure. Additionally, we provide the option to include liability, property, or cyber insurance coverage to further protect your business from unforeseen risks.
What Professions Do We Cater For?
Can’t see a profession similar to yours? No problem! The below are typical subcategories of wordings used, but there are many more. Give us a call, and our expert team will find a policy that suits your unique business needs.
Additional Covers Available
At Clarke Williams we understand the unique risks faced by professionals in various industries. That’s why we offer tailored Professional Indemnity Insurance solutions designed to meet your specific needs. Our policies can include extensions such as:

Is Professional Indemnity Insurance a Legal Requirement?
Only certain professions are legally required to hold PII. These include solicitors, estate agents, and others who frequently interact with the public. However, for many professions, there is no legal requirement, but a regulatory or professional body mandates cover. Examples include:
-
Architects (RIBA / ARB)
-
Surveyors (RICS)
-
Accountants (ICAEW)
Can I Purchase One-Off Cover?
No. PII policies are typically written on a 12-month basis and must remain active for the duration of your business exposure. One-off cover is not available due to the claims-made nature of the policy.
What is a Retroactive Date?
This is the date from which your work is covered by your policy. Any claims arising from work done before this date will not be covered.
What is Run-Off Cover?
Run-off cover protects you after you cease trading or retire. It ensures you’re still covered for claims made against work carried out while your business was active.
What is the Difference Between Aggregate and Each and Every Limit?
-
Aggregate: The maximum the insurer will pay out over the policy year, regardless of the number of claims.
-
Each and Every: The insurer will pay up to the full limit for each claim, no matter how many claims arise during the policy year.
What is the Difference Between Geographical and Jurisdictional Limits?
-
Geographical Limits: Where your services are delivered.
-
Jurisdictional Limits: Where any legal claims or proceedings can be brought.
What Does Costs Inclusive Mean?
This means that legal defence costs are included within the overall limit of indemnity. It can reduce the amount available to settle the claim itself. When a policy is arranged with costs in addition, the insurer agrees to pay legal costs in addition to the limit of indemnity being provided.
What is a Claims-Made Basis?
PII policies work on a claims-made basis, meaning the policy must be active both when the work was done and when the claim is made.
What Wordings Are Available for Professional Indemnity Insurance - And What If I Can’t Find One Suited to My Profession?
Professional Indemnity Insurance is underwritten using specific policy wordings tailored to different professions or industries. Common wordings include those for consultants, contractors, designers, surveyors, engineers, IT professionals, marketing agencies, and many more.
If your profession doesn’t neatly fit into a standard category, don’t worry. We regularly source bespoke or adjustable wordings that align with your business model and activities. Our brokers work directly with underwriters to ensure the scope of cover reflects the risks you actually face – even for niche or emerging professions.
Why Does Professional Indemnity Use Last Year’s Risk Information?
Professional Indemnity Insurance is built on the principle of claims arising from past activities. Because claims often emerge months or even years after the work was done, insurers assess risk based on historical data. As such, underwriting is primarily based on your previous year’s turnover, activities, and exposure – as these are most likely to give rise to future claims.
